(pronounced DOHL-drehmz)

Thought this odd little word describes the area near the earth’s equator that has low air pressure and little or no wind, it is more commonly used to describe feelings depression, stagnation, boredom, listlessness or despondency. In other words, low spirits.

Example: Ever since Jake’s boss removed him from the high-profile Dubai office tower project team and reassigned him to work on a bland low-rise multi-family project in Columbus, Ohio, he has had a case of the doldrums.
