exposed aggregate

Although it might sound a little risqué, exposed aggregate is actually a concrete mix used for landscaping applications such as patios, plazas, pool decks, driveways, and sidewalks. There are two installation methods: 1) the concrete is placed and the outer layer of cement removed to expose the aggregate underneath; or 2) the concrete is placed and the aggregate is seeded onto the surface. Either way, the surface of exposed aggregate installations is both visually and tactilely textured, giving it durability and skid resistance. The overall look will depend on the type of rock and whether a tinted sealer is added, altering the color of the concrete binder.
