(pronounced huhch)

A versatile word, a hutch can describe a variety of furniture pieces. At its most basic, a storage chest. Next, a cupboard having open shelves on top. Also, just the cabinets or shelves themselves placed atop a lower storage unit, whether it be a bedroom dresser, an office desk or a kitchen/dining buffet. Lastly, a tall storage unit housing a liquor compartment where the fold down compartment door serves to increase the worktop area for setting out the glassware. Originally, the term simply referred to a tabletop set onto a base in such a way that when the table was not in use, the top pivoted to a vertical position and became the back of a chair or wider settee.
