(pronounced ihn-TAHR-see-eh)

During the Italian Renaissance a type of wood inlay art emerged that today brings to mind a jigsaw puzzle due to the intricacies of the mosaic wood pieces forming the resulting image. Today artisans use the term to describe a more three-dimensional type of wood sculpture that results in free-form pieces fitted into hidden frame or support. Note that the term intarsia applies to the technique itself, as well as the resulting piece.
