(pronounced veh-TREEN)

In French, vitre means “pane of glass,” so it would not be so far fetched to think that the term vitrine would describe a glass showcase or cabinet used to exhibit goods or specimens. Originally more ornate, having glass set into carved paneled doors, sides and shelves, French vitrines of the late 17th century displayed delicate articles like fine porcelains and figurines.
