A Hot Shower

Almost nothing makes me feel better – both physically and mentally – than a hot shower. And I mean a really hot shower. The kind that make dermatologists cringe. You can scold me for using almost scalding hot water, as I know it’s not the best thing for our delicate human skin, but I just can’t help it. At least I moisturize.

Why A Hot Shower

Although my body temperature has been inching up slightly throughout the last decade, my hands and feet are often holding at a temperature best described as “supermarket dairy case.” When my fingers and toes turn a light shade of purple, the only lasting remedy I have found is a hot shower.

What other kind of therapy does a hot shower provide me?

  • Relieves tension in my neck and shoulders. (Better than aspirin, but not as good as lidocaine.)
  • Allows me to relax with a little aromatherapy. (I’m a true believer.)
  • Gives me a brief moment to clear my mind. (The ultimate side effect.)

I occasionally have fantasies about upgrading my very modest shower to be a little less cramped, incorporate Thermasol multi-sensory steam technology, and feature beautiful fixtures. (It doesn’t help that I just experienced the Hansgrohe Aquademie, where you actually get to test drive their lovely wares.) However, when it comes down to it, what I already have does the trick.

Considering the subpar living conditions of much of our planet’s population, I am incredibly grateful to have affordable, easy access to water that’s not only hot, but also clean and plentiful. For this reason, every time I get into the shower – whether for two minutes or ten – I smile and think how happy I am for this daily treat that can so easily be taken for granted.
