Home  What in the World?  Time Killers

Interior design can be a pretty stressful business.  Contrary to popular belief, it’s not all fun and games and glamour.  So take a little break once and a while and laugh.  Some of these sites will help you do it.  We don’t mean to offend, but we will warn you that some of these sites might be a little lewd, but it’s all in good fun.  Please email us at contact@plinthandchintz.com if you have some good contributions for your fellow readers.
  Bookmarks Hits
1974 Weight Watchers Recipe Cards
Food styling at its very best. And who knew you could do so many interesting things with mackerel? Again, we encourage you to explore the rest of this site. Fun (and fright) abounds here.
493
Addicting Games
Jonesing for some free mindless online entertainment besides the been-there-done-that, ubiquitous Tetris, Mindfield, Hearts and Solitaire? Then check out Addicting Games, a virtual arcade where you can rockem-sockem freestyle with new titles like “Escape from Rehab”, “Shore Siege” and “KMart DressUp!” Lord knows what you’ll find there, so don’t come crying to us if you run across something a bit randy or downright offensive. Consider yourself warned.
376
Albino Black Sheep
A comprehensive, crazy site for animation lovers and web developers. Download silliness, chat with like-minded people, post technical questions, etc.
362
Angry Alien
Cute and a little creepy at the same time. A summary: Cartoon bunnies reenacting condensed versions of the movies that have made tremendous impacts on pop culture.
377
Archie McPhee
Just in time for the holidays: an inflatable fruitcake. Seriously – we’re not making that up. If you have exhausted every single gift idea for the brother who has everything or if you just need a humorous diversion to bring your brain cells back to life, take a gander at Archie McPhee. All you have to do is to peruse the categories to know you’ve arrived at something completely different: Unicorns & Fairies; Zombies & Monsters; Bacon, Meat & Sushi. Need we say more? We don’t think so.
291
Bad Designs
As recommended by Professor Michael Dudek. So bad it’s good. Oh yeah.
635
Banterist
Need a dose of satire and humor? This site’s for you. Great stuff.
457
Be My Anti-Valentine
Bitter, table for 1! Sick of all the commercialized, mushy Valentine's Day propaganda? This this link is for you, girl. But be sure to look at the rest of the meish.org site - Meg's got some great stuff.
442
Brawny Man
This surprising jewel of a site was submitted to us by Julia Holcomb. The highlight: Innocent Escapes. The faux sincerity mixed with the ridiculous stereotypes will have you rolling. Bonus: You can customize your experience.
429
Brownie Points – Customized Conversation Hearts
Just in time for Valentine’s Day 2006, artist McAuliflower typed this entry on her blog (subtitled “a good girl’s notebook of her culinary world”) in a spirit of anti-Valentine-ism and historical homage. Not for the easily offended, this how-to guide explains the best method for transforming those traditional, overly sentimental, and downright banal candy greetings into messages of fine, flirty, raunchy fun. We recommend that you use this knowledge carefully and selectively.
351
Buttafly
Humor, politics, procrastination. We love their sass.
415
CAT PRIN, A Tailor For Cats
Cat lovers are torn about this site. Some think this is the funniest thing they’ve ever seen (we are in this camp), and some think this is cruel. Cat haters are all in agreement – it’s a riot. Don’t just look at the drugged-out cat pictures because the text makes it even better.
486
CollegeHumor
A world of warning: If you can’t handle movies like “Superbad,” television networks like G4, or magazines like “Maxim,” then don’t venture here. The content is raunchy, far from politically correct, and sometimes profane, but it’s often pretty damn funny too. In other words, it’s a lot like college.
284
Daily Bunny
Feeling a little testy? Think everyone’s against you? Then hop on over to Daily Bunny for a big dose of cuteness. Feel the tension relax…that’s it. You’re getting very happy. Just go with it. And if you let out a few “awwwwws”, then so be it.
606
Daily Candy
Fun stuff. The name says it all – it’s nothing you have to have, but stuff you probably want. Don’t worry if you don’t live in one of the big cities (La-La-Land, The Big Apple or Chi-town), you can still make DC work for you. Just choose the “Everywhere” option. Some of the sites linked here might have even come from Daily Candy emails. Who knows? We can’t keep track.
426
Dodgeball
Where are all your peeps? Keep track of ‘em by joining Dodgeball.com. This MoSoSo (Mobile Social Software) makes it easy. While you’re out and about, sign in via text message, and all your peeps within 10 blocks will get a text blast announcing your location. Messages can also go out to friends of friends who are also dodgeball members or crushes. Also use it to locate venues, tell everyone you’re back in town from the holidays or that you just spotted George Clooney. That’s definitely worth a shout out.
1128
Earth Calendar
What’s the date for Red Nose Day in the UK in 2007? Check out this groovelicious site. Entertaining & informative with holidays around the world and lunar phases. Find holidays by date, religion or country. Cool!
351
EarthCam
The name EarthCam could not be more descriptive. This website truly allows you to access live cameras all over the world. Think of the possibilities… While working in your tiny, depressing cubicle, you could fawn over the Tuscan countryside. From your messy dorm room, you could moon over the pristine beaches of Maui. From Podunk, USA, you could virtually hang out in Paris, France. Technology is good.
257
Engrish
Has a website ever made you cry because you laughed so hard? If not, then this is your site. Having a really, really bad day and feel like strangling your roommate / teacher / significant other / parent / etc.? Log on and watch all of your anger melt away. It’s cheaper than a massage and less upsetting than a trip to jail. If you’re over-the-top PC (politically correct, not personal computer, you dork!), then you might be offended. We choose to be highly amused instead.
465
Eurobad '74
OK, kids. This is the kind of design that we are desperately trying not to unleash on the world, but sometimes you need to expose yourself to The Bad so that you can successfully strive for The Good. The rest of the omodern.com site is worth a glance; however, know that it’s not in English. The images speak louder than the Scandinavian captions.
459
Face Recognition Software
Do you look more like Kate Beckinsale or Pamela Anderson? Or maybe both? Upload a photo and let the freakishly addictive “Find the Celebrity in You™” software figure it out. If you can drag yourself away from that, you can also use this site for its true mission: genealogy.
404
Flavor Pill
Welcome to the hipster network of email magazines covering art, cultural events, books, music, fashion and world news in six major cities. Subscribe for free to one or more of their 11 ezines or just drop in to check ‘em out.
366
FlexPetz
Would you love to have a pet but smartly realize that you don’t have the time or the finances to take care of a cute pooch full-time? If so, then FlexPetz is your salvation as it offers a flexible pet ownership program. Note that we put this in the Time Killers section not because we think dogs are a waste of time, but because they are just so darn lovable that they are a wonderful way to fill your day.
319
Font Capture
Listen up, all you creative narcissists out there! If you are in love with your own penmanship, there is now a way to create a font from your own much-loved handwriting and share it with the world. This magical, obsessive ode-to-self requires no special software, works for both Windows and Mac computers, and is – get this – free of charge.
243
Gallery of Regrettable Food: Meat 1
If there has ever been a website that has made us want to become vegetarian, this is it. Just think of it as pure comedy, and you’ll be OK. Maybe. (Once, after watching the movie “Parents” [1989], Laura didn’t eat meat for a month. This site is not that disturbing. To Laura, anyway.)
478
Gallery of Regrettable Food: Meat 2
More grease, more witticisms, more horror... more fun.
400
GeekOffice
Find those videos & photos that get forwarded around & around to your email all in one spot. And even some more that you didn’t expect.
1660
Gem Me A Sweater
How do we even begin to explain this site? You'll just have to look. It's become an internet cult favorite.
508
Global Rich List
This eye-opener of a British site hopes to “challenge people’s perception of their personal wealth” and while they’re at it, raise some money for a good cause. Enter your annual salary and see where you rank on the Global Rich List – think of it as an uber-expanded version of the Forbes’ 500 Richest list. Once you see where you rank in the world of wealth, you may decide you want to share just a tiny bit of YOUR wealth with others by donating to their current charity of choice. Go ahead, see how much better off you may be than you thought, then spread some wealth.
335
Goodreads
It's not just a virtual bookclub - it's a great way to catalog your book collection, access reviews of books, see what your friends are reading and what they thought of their books. For all you obsessive-compulsive types, you can even print out spreadsheets after cataloging your books into as many categories as you like.
293
Hairless Guinea Pigs
For all you hairless guinea pig owners and lovers, here’s a treasure trove of a site. Patterns for knitted piggy clothing, health tips, behavioral advice – it’s all here. And the pictures are alternately adorable and freaky. Check ‘em out.
1270
Hanzi Smatter
Remember Britney Spears infamous tattoo that supposedly translated as “mysterious”, but really meant “strange”. Don’t let it happen to you! Before you get that Asian-character tattoo, check out this blog that shows great examples of Asian gibberish.
373
Hulu
Warning: It’s easy to get immersed in this site, look up at the clock and realize that you’ve forgotten to take your kids to school or show up for that 8am conference call. Why? This site offers a myriad of free movies, TV shows and video clips from over 50 big name content providers. Some TV shows are even available the day after they air. Who needs TiVo?
272
I Like Totally Love It
When you love it, you want to share it. I know I do, and this may be my new fave site! This popularity site for great products is another new example of Web 2.0 – that is, using the web for social networking. Crafted by four German students, the site works like this: members post short product reviews with web links for buying the product. If enough members “totally love it”, the product is promoted to the front page for greater exposure. You don’t have to sift through everyone’s idea of cool, though. You can look at only the categories that interest you, such as accessories, art & design or furniture and/or subdivide by price! I, like, totally love it!
574
imdb
Love movies? Then you probably already have this bookmarked. Want to know the name of the hot new actor you saw on TV last night? Then get in the groove and bookmark this site immediately. Even though the name stands for “internet movie database,” it covers all aspects of the entertainment industry. It’s especially good for playing the Six Degrees of Separation game with your favorite celebrity. Plus, Laura’s boyfriend is on it, so she forced us to include it.
290
InStyle Hollywood Hair Virtual Makeover
Wonder what you’d look like with Reese Witherspoon’s bangs or J-Lo’s soft waves? Upload your own photo or pick a virtual model to see how fab or drab it would look on you before you grab those scissors and start chopping.
305
Its Animals
If you are amazed or obsessed with all of the exotic creatures inhabiting our fair planet, then this site will make you happier than a hippo swimming with his herd. Aggregating the latest news and videos featuring our furry, feathery and scale-y pals, this animal extravaganza will keep you entertained for hours.
348
Jason Mecier
Macaroni, buttons and yarn, oh my! This mosaic artist will make your head spin. Check out his celebrity “portraits” painstakingly hand-made from donations of the celebrities’ own stuff (markers, toothbrushes, cd covers, favorite chewing gum wrappers). Yup, it’s wacky, but a skilled wacky. He’s truly amazing. If you love his stuff you can even buy posters of his portraits ranging from $15 to $25.
461
JibJab
These creative brothers are our heroes. They're creative, smart, fun, irreverent, and entrepreneurial - basically everything we admire. Enjoy!
350
Kitty Wigs
Soooo ridiculous, and that’s why we love it. It’s exactly what it sounds like: wigs on cats. Yes, somehow the photographer coaxed her kitties to sit still long enough to pose for the camera. And due to felines’ tendency toward lack of interest in most activities not directly benefiting them – not to mention their dead-pan expressions – adding any kind of costuming intensifies the fun.
212
Meez
You’ve got a blog, MySpace page and you IM constantly. Now you can put your 3D virtual you on all of them. Meez lets you dress like Tombraider’s Laura Croft, show off imaginary tattoos and style your “hair” anyway you want to. Animate yourself singing karaoke or grooming a pony. It’s easy, fast and free. Haven’t you always wanted a mini-me?
282
MixPod
Addiction alert: MixPod allows you to create your own online music playlists of all your fave tracks without having to download anything. (They swear that it’s legal.). Put in the name of songs or artists to search, arrange in your preferred order, choose a “skin” (visual image) for your list, and voilà – you have a customized DJ creation to share your with friends. While you’re at it, you can learn (the real) lyrics to songs, get ringtones for your cell, buy new tracks, or discover similar tracks that you may have never heard. It’s easy for this site to be the ultimate Time Killer.
243
MoSoSo [mobile social software]
A new category of software – Mobile Social Software – that allows users to add a time and location element to a digital profile for social networking (i.e. hooking up) purposes. Several different companies offer software allowing you to register, then send out alerts via your cell phone or laptop detailing your location so that anyone in your network who’s in the surrounding area knows your location and can meet up with you. Check the wikipedia link above for various MoSoSo options.
385
MovieClips
If you are movie freak – i.e., are constantly quoting movies, renting movies, talking about movies, watching the same movies over and over again – then you are going to love this website. Search for your favorite scenes by dialogue, genre, character, title, actor, etc., and then share with friends or create your own movie mashup and then share with friends. Viva la cinema!
141
Mullets Galore
What can we say? We grew up in the South – prime breeding ground for mullets – and we find this hilarious. Heck, with as many hairstyles as we’ve had, one of us probably had a mullet at some time in our lives. (Though hopefully we’ve successfully destroyed all of the photographic evidence while home for the holidays.)
387
Name Voyager
Submitted to us by our friend and contributor Alyssa Schulke. If you’ve ever wondered how “common” or how hip your name might be, this is your source. Very interactive, even more fascinating.
399
Official Seal Generator
Talk about fun! Everyone needs a pat on the back and here’s a great way to make it look all official-like with a seal. Come up with your phrase – “calix meus inebrians” perhaps (“my cup makes me drunk”) or “Best Boss Ever” or maybe “Certified by Computer Gods”. Type it in, choose an appropriate icon, make your color choices and hit Go. Download your creation and slap it on whatever you like!
347
Orisinal
Ferry Halim is an artist/animator/game designer-but you won’t see typical video games at this site. These pretty, peaceful, zen-like diversions are great for anyone who needs a nature break, some style inspiration or a little hand-eye coordination practice. No guns or aliens – just kittens, ladybugs, virtual flower arranging and a virtual rain. Enjoy.
336
Peanut Butter Jelly Time
What’s says FUN better than a dancing low-res hip-hop banana? Hope your computer has sound or this site’s going to be lost on you.
531
Perpetual Kid
So you’re looking for evil test tube aliens. Or maybe a mooning gnome. Embrace your inner child and buy some toys from Perpetual Kid – it’s fun. But not always appropriate for kids or office!
1998
Pickupedia
Before your next night out at the meat-market of bars & clubs, scan Pickupedia for the best (or worst) pick-up lines to use on your intended target. Hey, it might actually work. Or you may get slapped. You never know.
508
Planet Dan
The welcome message says it best: “Welcome to planetdan.net, a random collection of semi-coherent thoughts and pictures. It is here that you may immerse yourself in all that is dan. Enjoy.” Submitted to us by Mechele Rittenberry.
462
Proust Questionnaire
Marcel Proust, the French intellectual, novelist, essayist and critic (1871-1922), composed one of the best known interview devices used in media. This fun, intelligent and concise quiz can be a great party game for getting to know your friends (and enemies!). Assouline offers deluxe editions with gold-leafed pages bound in gorgeous candy-colored Italian leather in their on-line Gift boutique.
436
RedesignMe
This site was referred to us by Matt Keedy of MJK Designs, Inc. How cool is this? Your chance to redesign a product that’s confusing or difficult to use. Or just submit a product and let other designers get creative. We love the tagline: Your Reaction to Bad Design. Says it all.
360
Rocket Boom
Get your 3-minute dose of "news" every day with this eccentric NYC-based videoblog. With new, British host Joanne Colan sitting in front of the grade-school map in somebody's apartment (sorry folks, original hostess Amanda Congdon has split to do her own thing) its less "Nightline" and more "The DailyShow" meets high school tv-broadcasting class. This zany blog covers everything from breaking scandals to the Geekiest Photo picture contest. Subscribe to the RSS feed to get it delivered fresh to your desktop every morning.
269
Seesmic
Beware: It’s easy to get sucked into this YouTube / Twitter hybrid for hours. The video blogging website makes it easier for people all over the world to upload video from their webcams, Flip Videos, etc. and hold “video conversations.” Created by a French entrepreneur, Seesmic could soon send ripples out into the cyber universe.
246
Sloppy Kiss Cards
If you are an animal lover, then you are going to purr, bark and squeak for this online greeting card service that features the cutest, sweetest, most ridiculous images of cats, dogs, and various other pet-friendly animals that you’ve ever seen.
101
SomeEcards.com
Need an edgy alternative to .Mac, Amazon and Hallmark e-cards? This is it. Our friend Kim Young passed along this hilariously creative, sassy and sometimes R-rated e-card site, and we’ve been laughing ever since. Bonus: You can even purchase old-fashioned hold-in-your-hand-and-send-in-the-mail versions.
336
Spectacular Clouds
There are no bunnies or horsies in these amazing cloud photographs – think giant marshmallows, dozens of babies, or gi-normous clumps of oven cleaner hanging over your head. That’s what I saw anyway. These Mammatus clouds are formed when the air is already saturated with rain droplets or ice crystals and begins to sink. Look out! They’re going to crush you! Well, not really, they usually appear after the worst of a storm is over. These pics were taken by Jorn Olsen in Hastings, Nebraska. Yikes!
353
Sporcle
IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO, Cheryl Durst, exposed us to this entertaining Time Killer. (“Not that I ever waste time at work,” she qualified.) This website and mobile app offers an unlimited supply of stimulating, addictive quizzes that invigorate your brain cells and test your knowledge on just about everything from presidents’ middle initials to the 10 body parts that have three letters. Their mission is to provide brain-engaging fun everyday, and they do.
114
Spout
It’s a website. It’s a store. It’s a community. It’s MySpace for people who love films. Jump into a group to discuss Music in Movies. Make lists of recommendations. Read other’s lists and find new movies to try. Best of all, you can buy flicks right on the site. With this handy tool you may never again fall for that lame recommendation at your local “Rent-a-Flick” store.
274
Spring Fun
What do the gray whale, the ladybug, azaleas, Led Zeppelin’s Rain Song and Miami Beach have in common? They’re all associated with Spring. The Animal Planet cable channel devotes an entire section of its site to Fun & Facts about Spring to coincide with the premiere of Animal Planet’s six-part series, “Spring Watch USA”.
484
Stuff On My Cat
Their tagline says it all: “stuff + cats = awesome”. This site features pictures of stuff piled on cats. Mostly sleeping cats. We assume they’re sleeping anyway. It’s pretty hilarious. If you’ve got a cat, throw some stuff on it, take a pic and submit it. Your cat could be famous.
325
Sucks/Rocks
Dare to compare based on internet rankings using this quirky on-line application. Type in something you want to rate – say different types of cell phones. Type in each one individually and the site will rate it based on positive or negative phrases found about it on the Internet. Lucky for us, PLiNTH & CHiNTZ totally rocks!
330
Test Cafe
If you are one of those people who LOVES taking tests – the fun kind – then you will love this site. From IQ to career to love, they’ve got a test for it.
376
The Daily Reel
Still looking for quality video, but want something a little more “indie”? Check out The Daily Reel. Yeah, the Asian guys singing the Backstreet Boys song was funny, but sometimes you want a little more. This site ferrets out the best in online video as reviewed by film & TV critics, pop culture commentator and online mavens from traditional & online media. Who knows, the next George Lucas may be discovered by these folks.
389
The Gobbler Motel & Supper Club
Our great friend Heather Hirsch reminded us of this gem. You just have to see it to believe it. The epitome of bad design. Gotta love it!
439
Top Tips For Girls
We put this UK-based resource in the “Time Killers” section only because it is quite easy to start clicking around this site, look up and realize that it’s an hour later than it was when you started. Yes, there is that much helpful info – contributed by “girls” just like you relating to everything from break-ups and medical care to savvy travel and interpersonal skills in the workplace. And if you have a hot tip for your fellow XX-carriers, by all means, share it!
449
Trend Hunter
If you’re looking for the latest trends or feel the need to point them out to others, go directly to Trendhunter.com. The largest online trendspotting community lets you read about or even contribute to their library of current trends. You can even earn money by being a trendhunter.
331
Tweeting Too Hard
Our friend Rob Brinkley turned us on to this hilarious aggregate website after reading about it in the New York Times. The site consolidates self-important real-time Twitter posts for everyone’s amusement and amazement. And we do mean amazement because you will be absolutely shocked what some people choose to share with the general public. Beware: It is way too easy to get sucked into this site. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
138
Universal Record Database
When they say “records,” they aren’t referring to the vinyl DJs like to spin. They’re talking about the “Guinness Book of World” kind. However, these guys believe that every one of us has promise to be The World's Best (fill in the blank here). Though they have rules – i.e., quantifiable, breakable and legal – and a committee, they do not judge or discriminate. If you can think it up, then you can probably submit it for consideration. For example, the day we checked the site, some examples of posts included “Most Ponytails On One Person” and“Fastest Time To Unravel A Roll Of Toilet Paper.” You get the picture.
220
Unnecessary Knowledge
You know that cute, spiky-haired kid in “Jerry Maguire” that plays Renée Zellweger’s little boy? The one who loves to spout off random non sequiturs about the weight of the human head and how bees can smell fear. Is his character name Ray? Well, anyway, this website was made for him. It’s basically anything you never knew you wanted to know, and you’re sure to find something on here that will break the ice during that next awkward cocktail party moment.
424
VideoJug
Need some new skills or just want to sharpen some of your existing ones? No need to go to your local community center anymore because now there’s VideoJug. With the tagline “get good at life,” you can imagine the broad range of life lessons available. Or maybe you can’t, so here are but a few: making a cappuccino; making the first romantic move; removing chewing gum from clothing; boosting your iPhone signal; throwing a left hook…
132
Visible Tweets
Even though it seems so, as of November 2009, the Twitter frenzy has not yet hit its peak. Many websites have emerged that use Twitter as a jumping-off point for other manifestations of communication. Visible Tweets is one of those. Enter a topic or keyword and it produces – in actual time – a full-screen visualization of it using a variety of animation styles. It’s hard to describe, so you’ll just have to see it to understand…
236
WebCam Central
Disclaimer: this is NOT a porn site. It’s simply a collection of webcams from all over the world. Don’t like the view out your window? See what it looks like at Tee Harbor, Alaska or in some crazy person’s backyard. Or check out the Pancake Cam from the Pancake House in Myrtle Beach, SC. My personal fave: the Random Cam. Click on it to go someplace unexpected for a spontaneous mini-vacation. I just spent 5 minutes Netherlands. It was great!
317
Wordle
It’s difficult to describe Wordle – you really have to see it to understand it. We’ll try, though. This self-proclaimed online “toy” creates “word clouds” directly from whatever you type in. Your ideas + their system = graphic works of art. If you are a control freak, don’t worry – you can alter the computer-generated outcome. What do you do with your Wordle images? Anything you like. Here’s a thought: How about a “Wordle to your mother” this Mother’s Day?
256
Wordlet
In a nutshell, Wordlet offers up word puzzles and games that you can lose yourself in for hours upon days. They even have printable puzzle versions for those times when you just can’t take the Internet with you.
186
Ze Frank
Ze is a guy who just can’t stop… dancing, writing, philosophizing, analyzing, playing with his cat (that’s not a metaphor – we mean it literally). Frank-ly (we’re so clever!), he’s a phenomenon. A minor press darling. You’ll just have to see what we mean by visiting his site.
342
Zubbles
Who doesn’t love bubbles? And who wouldn’t be absolutely blown away (yes, pun very much intended) by bubbles in hue-saturated colors of pink and blue? Not just for the post-toddler to under 10 set, Zubbles are just as mesmerizing to backyard spectators as they are to the lucky duck expelling the air to create them. And if your boss doesn’t look kindly on blowing bubbles in the conference room, download the Zubbles iPhone app for a virtual bubble fix.
