Over the past year, I have really enjoyed reading the articles on Plinth & Chintz. With little over a year under my belt in the design profession, I still feel like I have so much to learn. This website / newsletter is a fun source of valuable information. I wish that there had been a resource like this when I was in school. Thanks! - Stephanie Kuykendall, Allied Member, ASID - Wingler and Sharp
Walls have come a long way, baby. Paint and its many variants are certainly still the leaders of the pack due to an infinite palette, ease of installation, and relatively low material and labor costs, and wallcoverings have made Olympic-sized strides in terms of texture, finish, and durability. However, thanks to impressive technological innovations in materials and manufacturing, design professionals now have an almost endless array of possibilities to treat interior walls. Whether for commercial or residential application, designers can incorporate any type of imagery their client desires, take advantage of techniques like ultra high-resolution digital printing and three-dimensional injection molding, and integrate anything from natural materials to high-gloss, shimmering metallics. Now if we only had endless budgets…
In a world obsessed with the new, the now and the next, finding someone who is equally as passionate about the past is shocking and astonishingly refreshing. Brent Hull is such a someone. As Owner & President of Hull Historical, Brent lives and breathes classical moldings and interiors, and fortuitously taking his enlightening course on that very subject at METROCON Expo & Conference is the reason our paths crossed. Brent began to hone his craft when he studied Historic Preservation and Preservation Carpentry at North Bennet St. School in Boston, Massachusetts, but not before he earned his Bachelor of Arts in History and English at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. His liberal arts foundation has certainly served him well. Not only does his company have an impressive blog called The Timeless House, but he has also authored several books and has a new title in the works called Building a Timeless House in an Instant Age, which condenses much of what he has learned in the last 20 years. In the meantime, read on to find out how Brent has turned his love of classical design into award-winning work and a successful, multifaceted business.
2013/05: I’m Just A Design Student… I Don’t Have A Network
contributed by Aga Artka, Allied ASID, LEED AP [designer / blogger / entrepreneur / mentor] and Jenny Schrank, Allied ASID [writer / connector / mentor / marketing agent]
According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of networking is…
net*work*ing – n.: the exchange of information or service among individuals, groups, or institutions; specifically: the cultivation of productive relationships for employment or business
In other words, if you talk to people, then you already have a network. And while many design students think they are at a disadvantage if they don’t know hundreds of design-related professionals, that is simply not true.

According to the 2012 Home Design Trends Survey by the American Institute of Architects [AIA], interest has grown in designing homes with more open space and programmatic flexibility to provide a less formalized setting created for the individual lifestyle preferences of the homeowner. Always a key area for renovation, people are now looking to the bathroom as much more than a space for cleaning and grooming. Rather, it is fast evolving to become a main focus of the home, one where wellness, hygiene, technology, and relaxation seamlessly blend together. From the implementation of high tech features to the use of color and natural materials, Duravit has created a wide range of beautiful and functional products, which are setting trends in the bathroom.
To bridge the gap between the student / educational community and the professional / manufacturer community of the interior design world, and not to die of boredom while we do it.
