Have a burning question that you want answered other than “If I buy enough ab workout machines from infomercials, will I get a six-pack merely from osmosis and good intentions?" Then email us at contact@plinthandchintz.com, and be sure to put ASK ME in the subject line. Due to the volume of questions and/or the obscurity of your particular question, we may not get to it in the next issue, but we'll do our best to keep up.
QUESTIONS FOR SEPTEMBER 2005:
I just received an email from you, and I noticed a congratulations to the outstanding ASID student chapter. How did they win? I would love to enter my school's student chapter for things to win. Could you send me some information on contests or seminars or anything you might be able to share with me. Thank you. (submitted by Teresa Turowski) As answered by Mimi Moore, ASID, IDEC, CID [Interior Design Professor, MesaCollege of San Diego; Chair, ASID Student Advisory Council; 2005 ASID Student Chapter Awards Juror]
I enjoy receiving your newsletter however the last time I got one, it went into my bulk mail box. I retrieved it, but anytime something gets sent out in bulk, this AOL thing sends it to spam. Is there any other way that you can send it to me without it going in with the bulk mail? (submitted by Rosaura Rodriguez) As answered by Laura McDonald, IIDA / ASID

You are referring to the ASID Student Chapter awards that included the following categories:
Outstanding Student Chapter of the Year
Newsletter of the Year
Website of the Year
Fundraiser of the Year
Outstanding Student Representative to the Board of the Year
Faculty Advisor of the Year
All of these student award categories and criteria are listed in the ASID Student Chapter Manual, which is now in CD format. Check with your Student Chapter President because they receive the CD from National ASID, but the manual is also on-line at www.asid.org under the student section.
Another competition that you might be interested in is the Second Annual 2006 ASID Student Design Award Competition, which is now posted on the website as well. This contest is open exclusively to ASID student members in any year of study. The winning entry will be announced at INTERIORS '06: The ASID Conference on Design, and prominently published in ASID ICON, ACCESS, the ASID student newsletter, and on the ASID website. You can also check with your Faculty Advisor because the competition packet has been sent out to them.
The website is also a great resource for scholarships. The ASID Educational Foundation provides scholarships and awards for undergraduate and graduate students in a number of categories. Click here to access the list, or, for additional information about ASID Foundation scholarships and awards, contact the ASID Education Department at 202.546.3480 or via e-mail: education@asid.org.

Thanks for alerting us to the spam / bulk mail issue. Unfortunately, you are not the first to do so. We do our best to include content in our email newsletter that won't trigger spam filters, but every provider seems to be a little bit different. Filters have criteria for both subject lines and email text body. The “rules” are commonly based on percentages of things like the amount of capitol letters, fonts of a certain point size, html / graphics, bright colors, etc. The higher the percentage of these things that are present, the higher the “point value” the email will score. If the point value reaches or surpasses a certain level set by the provider, then the email is interpreted as spam.
Filters also scan for certain words, of course. For example, we used the innocent word "unadulterated" in an article intro once, and the string of letters a-d-u-l-t was interpreted as the word "adult," which triggers filters for obvious reasons. And, ironically, we couldn’t even use the word “spam” in this month’s newsletter when addressing this issue because it would also trigger filters. Needless to say, it is very frustrating and difficult to catch every single little trigger, especially when we don’t really know what all of the rules are.
The best advice would be to add the email laura@plinthandchintz.com to your email address book. The newsletters come from this address, and many systems will not filter out emails sent by an address that is present in your email address book. The other recommendation is to keep looking in your spam catcher / bulk mail folder every once in a while. It's a pain, we know, but we have gotten into the habit of it because we also receive emails from businesses, magazines and vendors that end up there.
Since spammers continue to annoy us with offers of low home mortgage rates, cheap prescriptions drugs, diplomas requiring no effort, etc., providers continue to step up their systems. With those upgrades come problems for legitimate businesses like ours. However, until someone invents the perfect system, we’ll all just have to take any action we can to keep receiving the email we DO want and keep out the email we DON’T want.
