Designers and architects shape space. Similar to sculptors, they start with a mass, visualize its potential, and then add and subtract until their idea is tangible. This combination of artistic and technical ability influences the experience of every person who encounters those spaces. shapingspaces.gifQuite a powerful societal role, if you stop to think about it.

Though designers use their creative powers to form the details, it’s society that directs their chisel. As the world continually morphs, designers must in turn respond. Technological progress, sociological shifts, psychological research, economic conditions, global harmony – it all shapes how they shape space.

One of my favorite online publications – besides PLiNTH & CHiNTZ, of course – is Springwise.com. Every month it reports on emerging business ideas that its traveling troupe of trendspotters gathers from around the world. These ideas capitalize on trends instigated by how varying cultures and generations live, work, and play. Many of them involve the design of space: who is using it, how they’re doing it, and why they’re demanding it.

It is fascinating to see how designers respond to these changing demands, forming solutions and shaping day-to-day life. I recommend you do a little investigating on your own, whether it be through Springwise or in your own neighborhood. Information and inspiration is out there – all you have to do is look.
