By now most people have heard the term “smart house” to describe a home in which highly planned systems provide domestic comfort and convenience through lighting controls, security monitoring, multimedia entertainment, and energy consumption. But did you know that there exists a precise term to describe this growing obsession with infusing our abodes with enough technology to make even NASA proud? DOMOTICS. According to WWW, domotics is a combination of the ancient Latin word "domus" (house) and the more contemporary term "robotics." Ah hah. Now it all makes sense.
In an age when technological advances render your laptop passé upon arrival, the notion of turning on the washing machine via cell phone on the commute home isn’t such crazy idea. As broadband Internet connections grow more prevalent and cell phone networks expand, using a PDA while on vacation to instruct a sprinkler system to increase watering time on your precious bougainvilleas is more reality than fantasy.
But where to go when you’re looking to make your condo clever, your studio apartment astute, or any interior intelligent enough for membership in Mensa? CEDIA: Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association. This international group certifies its trade association members that specialize in designing and installing specialized electronic systems for the home.
Of course the goal in all this techno-savvy stuff is to elevate our well-being by creating more leisure time and peace of mind. Though I’m pretty resolute that Happiness is a warm puppy, I’m not so sure that Happiness is a warm CPU. Though those little robot dogs are awfully cute…
