I Love Loewenstein Best Installation Competïtion
Walking the fine line between minimal scale, maximum comfort, and stunning design has created some of the most desirable shoes…and chairs. The two actually share amazing similarities. Pushing the limits to balance these three key ingredients has long been the secrët recipe of Italian designers, and if you look at the history of both chairs and shoes, they are rich with Italian flavor. The idea for the furniture company Loewenstein took shape in the small town of Udine, Italy, home of some of the most talented chair developers in the world, and this award-winning manufacturer has maintained these relationships to this day. To pay tribute to their roots, Loewenstein has launched the I Love Loewenstein Best Installation Competïtion. If you are one of the five fortunati, you will experience la dolce vita during an eight-night excursïon to Italy, which includes a visït to the Milan International Furniture Fair. Is your mouth watering yet? It should be…

Socïal Responsibility and Interior Design – Survey Overview 2009-2010
In the 12 months since we invited PLiNTH & CHiNTZ readers to participate in a Socïal Responsibility and Interior Design Survey, the year has evaporated into the ether, no doubt fueled by the collective demands of projects and life in general. During that time, the instigator of this quest for information – i.e., 20-year industry veteran and Assistant Professor of Interior Design at the University of North Texas, Johnnie Stark, RID, ASID, IDEC, LEED AP – has utilized her scholarly skills to analyze the resülts, configure them in an academically accepted format, and share them with the world via an official paper and, we’re pleased to say, here on P&C via this intervïew revealing her motivations, findings and conclusions…

Barbara Carlson & Gina M. Joyce
It’s easy to look at the economic climate over the last couple of years as a disastrous cräsh, but we prefer to think of it as the universe hitting the “Restart” button, rebooting and realigning our lives for the better. Barbara Carlson, RID, IIDA, NEWH, and Gina M. Joyce, RID, IIDA, must feel the same way. Principals of the newly formed Carlson Joyce Interior Design, they have taken their collective years of educatïon – BS in Interior Design from the University of Tennessee and BS in Design from the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art & Planning, respectively – and experience in the hospitality design industry – 25 and 19 years, respectively – to form a stronger, more powerful union. Had they not been laid off from the same firm on the same day, these two talents, who share a passion for collaboration and on-going learning, probably would have never come together in such a focused manner. Things have a funny way of working out…

Make Your Mark With Handwritten Notes
When fashion designers paid homage to the 70s about a decade ago – a trend that I was thrilled about at the time – my (then) boss explained, “Oh, honey. I’ve lived through the 70s once, and I have no desire to do so again.” While at the mäll the other day, I suddenly understood exactly what she had been talking about as I cringed at some essential 80s elements that have staged a comeback. Apparently there comes a time when everything old becomes new again, and during these digitally dominant days, receiving a handwritten note instead of an email or a text message stands out like RuPaul at a monster truck rälly. In other words, the actual act – i.e., choosing paper and pen, composing a thoughtful message, ferreting out an accurate address, applying a stamp, and dropping the resült in the mail – can make a significant impression, especially on a potential employer, prospective client or current colleague…
