Initial Response - Software Survey
Our software survey results prompted some reader comments, but we’d like to know more. If you have had extensive experience on any one of the software packages that we mentioned in our “Decoding Designer-Friendly Software” article, we’d love to hear from you so that we can spread the word. Opinions and reports can be anonymous if requested (we don’t kiss and tell), but shout it out at
contact@plinthandchintz.com. In the meantime, see what one professor, one professional, and one student had to say...

Susan Barker
“Open wide!” That was the greeting Susan Barker gave to her clients for the 16 years she was a dental hygienist. These days she’s more likely to ask you about your floor plan than your flossing habits as she works toward a degree in interior design. So how does a person make such a drastic career change after so long in the field? Read on to find out...

Your New House – Compromises & Contractors, Part 1
EDITOR’S NOTE: If you haven’t experienced it yet, chances are you will: buying a home and then figuring out how to make it your own. Or maybe you’re an aspiring entrepreneur needing a place to make your first million? The same anxieties surface — what to do first, how to work with a contractor, and how to avoid your own personal version of The Money Pit. Fortunately, the same advice applies: review, plan, budget, and heed these secrets to keep your bank account from vaporizing...

Write On – Defining Interior Design Journalism

EDITOR’S NOTE: When it comes to the topic at hand, new contributor Karen Watts Perkins knows of which she writes. Not only is she a designer, but she is currently a Master of Arts candidate in journalism at The University of Alabama. At PLiNTH & CHiNTZ, we strive to expose our readers to a variety of career options related to the design field, so we were thrilled when Karen agreed to share her smarts with us. Many of you have expressed interest in writing about design, so this article is for you...

Self-Confidence – BE & Believe In Yourself
Do you believe in yourself and your capabilities as a designer? Many students find low self-confidence hard to overcome. If you don’t believe in yourself, then how will you convince an employer that you are right for a job? Finding a healthy level of self-confidence can be difficult, but if you think back to Goldilocks and the three bears, then you will realize that it is important to find a balance between too hot and too cold...

Question for March 2006:
We are finding accessorizing more and more important as we enter past jobs and find our design work hiding behind a bad choice of planter, clock or task light etc. Does anyone know of a good accessories resource for commercial interiors that offers a catalog? (submitted by Amanda Cordier, Stibler Associates) As answered by Amy Johnson, PLiNTH & CHiNTZ

I literally stumbled upon this site [CLUBCHiNTZ.com] during a Google search and I must say "It's about time!"… for an approachable, hip, informative site that bridges the Great Gap between the Ol' School and the New. This site is so well done and I am excited to be an active member of this new community. There is a wealth of knowledge to be had and I'm gonna get it. Thanks for helping and kudos to the creator.

Shaping Spaces

Designers and architects shape space. Similar to sculptors, they start with a mass, visualize its potential, and then add and subtract until their idea is tangible. This combination of artistic and technical ability influences the experience of every person who encounters those spaces. Quite a powerful societal role, if you stop to think about it.

Though designers use their creative powers to form the details, it’s society that directs their chisel. As the world continually morphs, designers must in turn respond. Technological progress, sociological shifts, psychological research, economic conditions, global harmony – it all shapes how they shape space.
