The Road Less Traveled
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference...” (Robert Frost) For some interior design students, the path is clear — graduate from high school, pursue a college degree in interior design, and start off on your design career in your early twenties. The choice is simple, the direction clear, and the career moves full steam ahead. For others, the roads have been diverse and long. No matter when and how they were directed to a career in interior design, they don’t regret their decision to pursue this profession later rather than sooner. They are happy to be fulfilling their dreams…

The Way Of Feng Shui – Part 3
Pleasure, harmony, and positive energy — that’s what good design should bring to all interiors. The ancient principles of Feng Shui can be applied to the places where we work, heal, teach, entertain, and live. In this final installment of the three-part series, we explore the significance of lighting, color, and natural elements, expounding upon the nine symbolic “cures” that may be used realign a broken environment with the ultimate goal of restoring balance and promoting serenity.

I Have A Great Boss – Part 1
With the release of The Devil Wears Prada, it’s quite apparent that there are many degrees of Bad Boss Syndrome. We’ve all had one, probably more than one in some cases. But without bad bosses there would be no Dilbert, no Office Space, nothing to unite the workers over beers. And that is a world I don’t want to live in, my friends. On the flip side, how many of us can say we have a good boss? Or a great boss? Have you, or anyone you know, ever had one? They aren’t as rare as we might be led to believe. I’ve had several over the years, and in having them, I‘d like to think I’m a much better person to work for / with / around. Most of my friends chalk it up to luck, but actually, it’s a bit more than that. I know what to look for when interviewing…

Why Color Is Primary – Part 2
Did you know that all living creatures need color in order to survive? Or that all human beings are affected by color, even if they’re not consciously aware of it? Color is a sensory perception that evokes a response on a cellular level. Color is also a language that is universally understood by all humans, regardless of their country of origin. This month we’ll explore how color affects humans and why designers should be cognizant of this when specifying color for their environments…

Question for August 2006: I am interning at an architecture firm this summer and hope to work here when I graduate in May 2007. I am curious about what I might expect my salary to be right out of school. I know it depends on your location and size of firm, but I really have no idea what to expect. I love this website and I was just wondering if there are any articles covering this topic on Plinth & Chintz. Thanks so much! (submitted by Rachel Starr) As answered by Amy Johnson

Quite a while back I wrote in regarding exhibit design. You did extensive research in order to answer my little 'ole question. I just wanted to give you little update and let you know that I've reached my goal of becoming an exhibit designer. In February I began working for a design and fabrication company based in Houston. Things are going great and I'm learning a lot. I wanted to say thank you for your help in realizing my dream. - Elizabeth B.

New ideas to inspire you, all with a sustainable twist…
• Accessibility. That wellspring of entrepreneurial ideas, Springwise, recently featured Kenguru, the uber-compact Hungarian-born vehicle providing the wheelchair-bound amazing independence. Part Mini, part Jetsons spaceship, this small wonder has only one door – a hatchback that allows the mobility-challenged to roll right in without ever leaving his or her chair. To top it off, this little jewel runs on electricity. These might not be ready for prime time US highways or the Autobahn, but look for them on side streets and urban centers soon. Read a few more details and see photos here.
