METROCON06 Expo & Conference – Everything’s Bigger In Texas [with PODCAST]
Right or wrong, Texas carries with it a strong image and conjures up certain descriptors: big, ambitious, and pioneering, just to name just a few. Stereotypes emerge from seeds of truth, and sometimes the truth hurts. In the case of METROCON, however, the truth feels good. Real good. The event, which was just held in Big D (a.k.a. Dallas) in August 2006, has emerged as the largest design industry-related regional expo and conference in the U.S. And the kicker is that this tradeshow rodeo is organized by volunteers from three different professional organizations. See what a little cooperation can do? Yee haw!...

Florida State University
Located in Tallahassee, Florida State University doesn’t just gain energy from the ever-present sun. The presence of a busy state government and a concentrated academic community create a climate hot with politics and an atmosphere charged with innovation. The FSU campus is a short drive from the Gulf Coast in what is known as the Big Bend region of the Sunshine State. Though not quite as old as the state’s famous Everglades, the university has taught some aspect of interior design since it was founded in 1851, many years before the idea of interior design even materialized. So if you are looking for an interior design program with a solid history, consider FSU and all it has to offer...

Jennifer Velarde [with PODCAST]
A Custom-Made Career – The abbreviated story of Jennifer Velarde, founder of 1154 LILL STUDIO Custom Handbags: Once upon a time there was a little girl named Jen whose mother and grandmother taught her to sew. She grew up, attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, got a degree in interior design and soon after moved to the big city of Chicago to start her career in the world of corporate design firms. Flash forward a few years to 1998. Interior design just wasn’t doing it for Jen. She wasn’t feeling the passion she wanted to feel about something she was spending so many hours of her life doing. So what’s a designer to do? Why, reinvent herself...

Seal-A-Deal: Working With Commercial Furniture Dealers - Part 1
EDITOR’S NOTE: When aspiring designers emerge from school, they’re brimming with essential book smarts but usually lacking in practical street smarts. They will (or should) have some academic experience with space planning and contract furniture layouts, but the majority don’t have a clue where to source, price, specify, and procure it all. And what about installation? It’s plain overwhelming. For this reason, we’ve asked an expert in the field to explain the role a furniture dealership, and how they will (or should) help designers professionals create the perfect office environments for their clients...

I Have A Great Boss – Part 2
EDITOR’S NOTE: Who ever heard of a great boss? Aren’t the two words an oxymoron, like jumbo shrimp or working holiday? Not necessarily, if you learn how to pick one. Last month savvy employee Beth Cowan gave us the skinny on what makes her boss so boss. This month she exposes just how she recognized the potential for such a satisfying working relationship before she committed to the job. And all without digging out her tarot cards, Ouija board, or Magic 8-Ball...

Question for September 2006: A year ago, one of my professors at suggested that I apply for the NCIDQ so that they can open a file on me. I just reviewed the application and it asks for design work experience (which I don't have) and degrees earned (I have one undergraduate degree but won't have my interior design associates degree in design until May). Should I still apply? (submitted by Lisa K.) As answered by Jan Bast, ASID, IIDA, IDEC - NCIDQ 2006 President-Elect

Until now, I thought there weren't any sites on the Internet quite like yours. In fact, I didn't even know that plinthandchintz.com existed until yesterday. A professor of mine sent me an e-mail with your link attached. When I clicked on the link a whole new world appeared before me! I've enjoyed your site thus far, it's been a great inspiration for me.
