[International Federation of Interior Architects / Designers]

“Light” is the theme of this year's World Interiors Day_WID2007. Each year WID is celebrated either on May 31 or the last weekend of May. This annual event is celebrated by IFI members representing over 57 member associations and more than 35,000 interior architects and designers in 40 countries. Read bout 2006’s WID here. The main goal of WID is to generate public attention for the profession of Interior Architecture, to enhance the knowledge and understanding about the profession, and to encourage cooperation between professionals. WID is not a centrally organized event; instead, it is celebrated in a variety of ways all around the world. Go here to find out more.

A New Solution To An Old Problem: How To Get A Job Without Experience

The age old dilemma in finding a good job is “how do you get experience without experience?” This catch-22 is especially true in the technologically-dense mediums of film, design, and visual effects. Employers are seeking applicants with proven experience as they don’t want to pay to teach them how to perform the tasks that they need done. Furthermore, even if they wanted to help them learn their craft, with ever tightening budgets and timelines, there just isn’t time…

Go here to see how another industry is solving this problem.

Earn Their Respect
EDITOR’S NOTE: A couple of months ago we received an inquiry from Marion Hermannsen, a frustrated aspiring designer from Ireland. So we politely asked established interior designer Linda Fritschy to provide an answer and planned on publishing the exchange in our GO AHEAD... ASK ME section. However, when we saw Linda’s thorough response, we decided that it was well worth a full article in THE “REAL” REAL WORLD. Why? Because it sets out some great guidelines that all of us, despite where we are in our careers, can follow...

IDEP – Someone To Watch Over You

Last month we introduced you to IDEP, NCIDQ's Interior Design Experience Program. For those looking to sit for the NCIDQ Exam, we covered what IDEP is, how it helps candidates prepare, and how to get started. Now it’s time to educate practicing professionals by answering the following FAQs: Who is eligible to participate in the program? Who supervises each participant’s involvement? And, lastly, to even be eligible to take the NCIDQ Exam, is participation in IDEP mandatory? But here’s one last question: Who needs to read this article? Professionals and students alike, as it affects their new hires and futures, respectively…

Question for May 2007:
I am currently working for an interior design firm and doing interior consulting on the side. My latest "side" client has requested to see my portfolio. The problem is I haven't updated my portfolio since I graduated four years ago. I'd like to use some type of software that I can compile pictures, descriptions and make a funky background for a marketing style portfolio, but what do I use and where do I find it? Do you have any recommendations of websites with free templates or software that is designed for this application? (submitted by Ashley) As answered by Laura McDonald, ASID / IIDA

Spring Clean Green

Spring is in full swing, so fling open those doors and windows, chase the dust bunnies that have multiplied over the winter months, and prune your possessions by setting aside piles for your garage sale and/or a hefty Goodwill donation. Of course, we’re talking about that centuries old tradition of spring cleaning. (BONUS: If you really want to get serious about things, follow these spring cleaning checklists.)

I just took a continuing education class called “Eco Labeling” during the (appropriately named) Spring Thing at Decorative Center Dallas, and it got me thinking: Now that we’re buying and specifying more eco-friendly furniture, finishes, furnishings, and equipment for our clients and ourselves, how do we clean them in an eco-friendly way? After a little searching, I found a few solutions…

Go here to freshen up.
