Don't Just Remodel Your Home - REGREEN It
The sluggish housing market is driving many homeowners towards remodeling. Whether they need to make their property more attractive to buyers (who currently have the upper hand) or they are abandoning moving plans, choosing instead to transform their current homes into the ones they've been dreaming about, upgrades are in. Luckily for them, the United States Green Building Council [USGBC] and the American Society of Interior Designers [ASID] Foundation have recently released REGREEN, a comprehensive set of approachable guidelines designed to inject some green practices into these projects, large or small. The bonus is that the strategies are not only handy for design professionals, but they're equally as useful for contractors, tradesmen, manufacturers and the homeowners themselves...

Lauriel Leonard
We'll admit it - we have a weakness for terrazzo. So when we heard from P&C fan Lauriel Leonard, Allied ASID, NEWH, NKBA, about her Atlanta-based company that creates countertops, sinks and tabletops out of recycled glass, shells, river rock, wedding rings ("yes, wedding rings") and even crushed toilets ("new, but imperfect, straight from the factory - I promise!"), we were most intrigued. DEX Studios is the culmination of a career that started with a BFA in Interior Design from the University of Georgia and continued with several positions hospitality, corporate and residential design. Now, as a Partner in DEX, Lauriel designs sustainable, "cool new things" for projects all over the U.S. and beyond, as well as partners with design heavy-hitters like Ann Sacks and Clodagh...

Question for July 2008: I am graduating from design school and am ready to start the interviewing process (very excited)! What is your suggestion on how to go about the process? I am interested in residential design. Do you typically call or go in person to talk to these potential employers? And what do you say? I don't simply want to say, "Are you hiring?" Also, my city is having a parade of homes and I plan to go. Is this the appropriate time to ask the designers about job openings? Please help! (submitted by Jeanna G.) I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your speech at Louisiana Tech University [March 27, 2008]. It was very informative. I love your e-mag too. Thanks for the wonderful information you provided us, and I hope you have a great success!

Fun In The Sun
Summer should be about fun, and the following are some design-related ideas to add to yours:

* Buck the trend by putting down your iPhone, walking away from your laptop and actually writing a letter (remember those?) to someone. When you do, show your appreciation for design by posting it with limited-edition commemorative stamps recently issued by the U.S. Postal Service honoring furniture designers Charles and Ray Eames.

Go here for a few more design-related delights.

When you enter Amazon or Barnes & Noble through our humble little website, a portion of your purchase - no matter what you buy - helps to keep PLiNTH & CHiNTZ up-n-running. The best part: It doesn't cost you anything extra and it helps us not have to charge you for your access to PLiNTH & CHiNTZ. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your support!
