2019 ICAA Summer Studio in Classical Architecture
Taking place June 17–July 13, the 2019 ICAA Summer Studio in Classical Architecture is a four-week, immersive program introducing students to skills, knowledge, and resources essential to the practice and appreciation of classical design. Students build a foundation in classical architectural design through coursework in a variety of areas.
The Overview
The 2019 ICAA Summer Studio in Classical Architecture introduces students pursuing careers in architecture and its allied fields to skills and resources essential to the practice of classical architectural design today.
Students spend their four weeks exploring the ideas, methods, and issues of classical architectural design. Lectures, field trips, discussions, and critiques during class sessions are supplemented by design exercises completed during and outside of class time.
The Curriculum
The curriculum is structured within a classical design studio and culminates in a design project for a new classical building. Studio work is complemented by on-site study of classical buildings throughout New York City and its environs. Visits to architectural offices provide the opportunity for students to engage directly with leading design firms.
Coursework is taught by architects and faculty active in the field of classical and traditional design practice and teaching. Upon completion of the program, students receive the ICAA’s Certificate in Classical Architecture.
The Foundation
Over four weeks, students build a foundation in classical architectural design through coursework in:
- The classical elements and principles of composition
- The literature of classical architecture
- Proportion and geometry
- Traditional urban form
- Observational and analytical drawing and rendering
- The study of precedent
