block repeat

(pronounced blawk ree-PEET)

Pattern. Whether in music or design, the brain craves it, especially the distinct repetition of elements that produces either an aural or visual rhythm. The block repeat is the simplest of patterns and appears everywhere: on building façades, fabrics, wallcoverings, carpet, architectural panels, and even in quilts. In a block repeat — which can also be referred to as a straight repeat, straight-across repeat, or square repeat — the recurring item appears directly on a horizontal line to the right or left of the original design image. Once you know what to call it, you’ll recognize it everywhere.
