construction administration / C.A.

(pronounced like the letters C.A.: see-ay)

Don’t panic when you hear the initials “C.A.” spoken during your first A&D-related job or internship. It’s not code for Clueless A$$ or Cloddish Adolescent. The abbreviation is the common way to refer to construction administration, which is the methodical procedure allowing an agent of the owner of the project at hand – usually an interior designer, architect, facility manager, or dedicated project manager – to oversee construction. The point is a checks and balances system – i.e., ensuring conformity to standards, specifications, and construction drawings. You mean contractors don’t always follow the drawings and specs? Say it isn’t so! (Yes, we are being facetious.)
