You will see that this term is also listed in the DESIGN SPEAK section. Out of its original meaning within the design industry grew its general meaning that we are explaining here: to cover up or gloss over something criminal or malicious.

Example: Though he knew that exposing the developer’s under-the-table dealings would jeopardize the biggest hotel design project his firm had ever worked on, Jeremy refused to whitewash the situation and take the evidence to the police.
