Go Getters 20 years ago No Comments

Sinead Gallagher is a gal who is good to go. The Irish lass just earned her Bachelor of Science – Family and Consumer Sciences degree in Interior Design from Texas State University
in San Marcos. While in school, this ASID student member worked on and off as a food server: “The hours were flexible and the money was good. It was important for me to concentrate more on my studies.”

Last summer Sinead got her feet wet in the design industry by interning for Cheryl Gardner Interior Design. The program at TSU actually requires an internship during the student’s last summer for graduation. The internship was a beneficial one: “Cheryl is a very talented designer and gave me a lot of hands on experience. The most important thing I learned from Cheryl was to be confident in yourself and your choices. She taught me a lot of technical aspects, but confidence is what I cherish most.”

Having a creative outlet has always been important to Sinead, but like many kids, growing up she didn’t realize that she could study interior design in school. “ I have always loved architecture and drawing floor plans, and I thought I was going to become an architect. I definitely love the architectural aspects of interior design, but I think interior design has more avenues to explore at this time.”

This go-getter is currently looking for an entry-level interior design position, and she’s approaching the industry with an open mind. “I think as a student, it is unwise to pick a favorite [field]. It is important to learn all areas of design to have a complete education. I love the softness of residential and the technical aspects of commercial. I think if I went back to school to further my degree I would love to learn more about lighting and sustainable building.”

Sinead couldn’t escape our nosiness either…

P&C: What were your favorite toys growing up”

SG: I played with Legos a lot as a child. I also had three older brothers and loved any competitive game or sport. Beyond that, I was really into my coloring books. I had more coloring books than anyone I knew.

P&C: What do you do for fun”

SG: I play soccer any chance I get. Being with people is fun for me. I love music and movies. I am really into politics right now and the environment. I also really enjoy cooking.

P&C: When you crave a snack, do you prefer something sweet or something salty”

SG: Wow! That is a hard question. To be honest, the best snack would contain both salty and sweet. If I had to choose one, I would choose salty, although my boyfriend would disagree. I do love chocolate.

P&C: What was the best part of Summer 2004″

SG: Graduation!!! That feeling of accomplishment and sheer happiness is one I will remember for a long time. I did also get to go to Ireland. I saw my family in Belfast and then went to Dublin. It was a great vacation.
