Architecture & Design Community, giving something back and helping the environment was never so simple. Just let the award-winning carpet company Bentley Prince Street nudge you a little to get you started through their new Cases for Care program. Back in January’s LIGHT READING, we encouraged you to “start small and start local.” Here’s your chance. And it’s so easy.

The Situation.

Bentley Prince Street is launching their new sample vehicle. This will produce thousands of plastic cases that will need to be repurposed or recycled. Before sending them back to the mill, they would like to try to contribute to local communities throughout the United States by implementing Cases for Care on a regional level.

The Motivation.

Why should they contribute” Why not” There are so many local organizations that would benefit from such a program: schools, shelters, orphanages, etc.

A few examples of Cases for Care in the past include:

• Rosie’s Garage (after school tutoring and activities program)
• All Saints Church Willard Elementary
• Santa Clarita Valley Single Mothers Outreach
• Del Haven Community Center

Other Bentley Prince Street incentives: cost savings and efficiency. Their sales representatives can merely refill the cases so specifiers are not compelled to throw out the entire vehicle when the sample contents are no longer needed. Plus, the cases occupy a smaller footprint in resource libraries, allowing Bentley Prince Street to provide firms a wider range of products in the same amount of space.

Your Participation.

So how do you, as a member of the A&D community, contribute”

• First identify a needy and worthy local organization.
• Contact them and find out what their need is and how many cases should be made.
• Determine the best contents to be put into the cases and purchase these supplies. (Please note that this will be a regional expense.)
• Plan an afternoon with some volunteers to fill the cases.
• Deliver the cases to the organization.

The Conservation.

Bonus: an environmental angle.

Besides aiding local community organizations, the program also helps support Bentley Prince Street ’s global sustainability mission by repurposing the cases.

Their new sample vehicle represents both the best and the most environmentally friendly way to deliver their samples to specifiers. Each box is made of 100% post consumer recycled content and can be recycled again. Cases that can be repurposed are separated from those that are damaged. Those that are damaged can be recycled. At their mill, Bentley Prince Street has a location that is specifically reserved for gathering and separating the good from the bad.

Existing cases in resource libraries will be changed to this new sample type over time, which is designed to utilize the swatches from the cases that will be incorporated into the new vehicle. All Bentley & Prince Street styles will be in this new form and will be together in resource libraries from this point forward.
