2020 Durkan dscvr Student Design Competition

Durkan, the hospitality flooring brand of Mohawk Group, is now accepting artwork submissions for the 2020 Durkan dscvr Student Design Competition, its annual hospitality design contest.

The Program

Sponsored each year by Durkan and NEWH, a leading networking organization for hospitality industry professionals, the dscvr program exhibits the talent of designers in the hospitality field and contributes toward the education of future designers within the industry.

The Requirements

dscvr is open to college and university students who are members of NEWH, which offers student membership free of charge. College faculty within interior design programs are encouraged to implement the competition as part of their curriculum.

Using the CAD file (provided in PCX format) of a standard Ballroom & Pre-function area, create a design solution of your choice considering the following:

  • Ballroom & Pre-function areas are to be designed as separate components, each area divided by transition stripes in the doorways (Transition Strips to be 4″ solid carpet).
  • Ballroom & Pre-function designs are to be different but designed to coordinate.
  • Number of colors not to exceed 12 in total.
  • Please think of each area as your blank canvas, designs confined only by the walls, the most innovative approach would be to avoid using surface patterns with an obvious repeat, with the exception of textural elements used to add detail and layering. We’d like to see how the entire floor space could become one large design.

Submit final patterns with photos or visuals, concept boards, sketches, write up, or other inspiration for PDI (Precision Dye Injected) carpets. Completed package to be sent to Durkan for judging.

The Judges

Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of Durkan associates and be judged based on concept, presentation and market feasibility.

The Pay-Off

The talents behind the top two submissions for 2020 will be awarded trips to Las Vegas to attend HD Expo, where one grand prize winner will be announced during the show. First place will receive a $2,500 NEWH scholarship from Durkan. The second-place winner will also be recognized with an award and $1,000. Designs from the top three finalists will be on display in the Durkan booth at the hospitality design trade show. Durkan will promote and catalog all winning designs.

The Deadline

All submissions are due March 20, 2020.
